In the 1980s, several national programs provided significant funding to modernize research laboratory facilities. The equipments purchased, however, meet only minimum requirements of basic research - low-to-medium instrument types. Rarely, were high-end models purchased. Also, there were a limited number of suppliers, mainly Japanese firms. This lack of market competition reduced the possibility for Chinese scientists to use and become exposed to other technologies and methods in their comparison studies. In the 1990s, the laboratory equipments purchased during the last decades became out-of-date and some cases obsolete. The Chinese government at central and regional levels recognize that “science and technology is crucial to China’s growth and position as a world leader”. They are determined to support with sufficient funding for this purpose. Today, there is significant need to modernize and upgrade scientific instruments for R&D and production. It is the most rapidly growing market segments for scientific instrument suppliers. The laboratories have received government funding to purchase new equipment and to modernize their facilities.
